Spanish is a Romance language spoken mainly in Spain and a small minority in Mexico and Venezuela. It is a regional language of the Ibero-Romance group that evolved from Vulgar Latin in the medieval Kingdom of Castile. Along with Catalan, Spanish belongs to the Oc-Eon Indo-European family of languages and is widely used in the Americas and beyond during Spanish colonization.The Spanish language was originally spoken in Iberia between the 7th and 15th centuries by the Iberians and their descendants. After the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain, it became the first language of many Jews who had migrated to what would become New Spain. In 1526, it became the official language of Mexico City and other cities in New Spain. In 1777, Napoleon’s troops conquered Spain and brought its culture back to France where it gained popularity with intellectuals.Spanish is considered one of the Romance languages and belongs to the Indo-European family of languages. It has several dialects, including Castilian Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Basque. The official language in Spain is Castilian Spanish.
