The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a graded evaluation test of the English language proficiency for non-English speakers. Established in 1989, IELTS is one of the most popular competitive exams conducted by the British Council, Idp Australia and Cambridge Assessment English jointly. IELTS tests a person's expertise of the English language in listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is accepted mainly in UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Canada.
There are two types of IELTS tests; IELTS Academic and IELTS General.
IELTS Academic is for aspirants who wish to get higher education or professional registration in a foreign country. It tests the person's capability to study or work in an English speaking atmosphere.
IELTS General is for candidates wishing to migrate to or study below undergraduate level in English speaking countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. It basically tests the person's overall understanding of the English language in social and workplace context.
